Licensing and attribution
This page explains the licensing and attribution of Demonstrandom writing and code.
The original material covered by these licenses is by Kevin T. Procopio, publishing as Demonstrandom. The grants cover only rights held by the author.
Why noncommercial?
The goal is to help people learn from the posts, reproduce results, and build on the work, with credit to Demonstrandom. Noncommercial licensing supports that sharing while reserving commercial reuse outside the licenses’ existing permissions for a separate conversation.
Commercial projects can be worthwhile; asking first is the intended tradeoff. This can make the code less convenient to adopt in products or libraries whose users need commercial rights. PolyForm’s express permissions for educational institutions, public research organizations, and other listed organizations still apply.
This rationale adds no license conditions. The applicable license governs each use, including its exceptions and permissions. For uses requiring a separate license, contact the author.
Writing and original figures
Unless otherwise noted, original writing by Demonstrandom published on this site is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). Figures expressly identified as original work by Demonstrandom are covered by the same license. The grant covers only rights held by the author. Read the full license.
You may share and adapt covered material for noncommercial purposes, subject to the license. When sharing it, credit Demonstrandom, retain the applicable notices, link to the original material and license, and indicate changes. Attribution may be provided in a reasonable manner for the medium and context; it must not imply endorsement.
The license defines noncommercial use by its purpose, not simply by whether the user is a business or a nonprofit. It does not restrict fair use or other uses that do not require permission.
Code
Original code examples by Demonstrandom published on this site are offered under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, unless otherwise noted. They are excluded from the Creative Commons content license. When redistributing any part of covered code, include the license terms or their URL and the required attribution lines in NOTICE.txt.
PolyForm permits noncommercial purposes and expressly allows use by the organizations listed in its terms, including educational institutions and public research organizations, regardless of funding. Its definition of permitted purposes differs from CC BY-NC.
The public code repository includes its own license, attribution notices, and citation metadata. Separately licensed code and dependencies retain their own terms.
Third-party material
Third-party artwork, photographs, quotations, datasets, and copied or adapted code are excluded from these grants. Follow the applicable source attribution, license, or permission. A caption or link does not itself grant reuse rights.
In particular, artworks illustrating the posts are not offered under Demonstrandom’s Creative Commons license merely because they appear here. If a figure’s ownership or terms are unclear, contact the author before relying on this site’s license to reuse it.
Citation and commercial permissions
For a post, please cite Demonstrandom, the post title, the publication date, and the original URL. When using code for research, also identify the repository commit or release used.
Academic citation is requested separately from the attribution obligations in the licenses. These licenses do not create ownership of facts, ideas, or mathematical methods.
For uses outside the applicable license’s permissions, including commercial reuse of covered writing, contact the author. Separate permission may be available; it is not granted by submitting an inquiry.
Research status
This is a research notebook. Writing, code, proofs, and numerical results may be incomplete or incorrect. Review the status and limitations of the specific post or implementation. The material is provided under the warranty and liability terms of its applicable license.
